Born in the 1960’s in the San Francisco Bay Area, by two creative, artistic and supportive parents. His talent was apparent very young and encouraged through his upbringing through peripheral art classes. Later, he drifted from art to pursue computer and science and finally settle in the medical field. His love of art never waned and is a frequent visitor to museums and galleries, reading any and every book on art and their masters he could get his hands on. Less than 3 years ago his return to drawing in his spare time was noticed by several of his patients which led to an interest by local galleries. This prompted a renewed interest in art creation with a slant towards the figurative. A natural from which he studied anatomy and biomechanics in school.

As an artist, Richard has refined an eye for subtle detail.. Through his art, he is able to relate this experience with subtle lines and shadows to bring emotion to his subjects. By the use of graphite in various tones and strengths, a sense of mood in even his simplest of line renderings to the darkest shadows of his more thoughtful portraits give these images unique character.

Having recently returned to the oil medium, his works are displayed in several galleries and are receiving great reviews. It isn't uncommon for his paintings to be sold within days of the initial hanging and sometimes are sold before completion. His subject matter is frequently portrait/figurative which holds true to his graphite roots. Always expressive and with a sense of intimacy and drama.

His main painting style uses the “old master” technique of layering and glazing. Applying many thin layers to achieve tone and depth. While this may take a bit longer to create, the effects are well worth it. His favorite artists include masters to current.

Richard continues his art by choosing subjects that reflect tangible feeling. His works include recognizable celebrities to commissioned pieces of patients, friends and their family members. Richard is currently is refining his technique by combining several styles, of which one example being his “Mother and Child” Rendering which gives an old world painting feeling of intimacy.

His works are available for purchase or display and are  available for personal commission.
